Misting a crested gecko terrarium. Is once a day enough?
Once a day, by hand or automatically — everything you need to know about humidity and misting in a gecko terrarium.
How often should you mist the terrarium?
In most cases, one thorough misting in the evening is enough. Crested geckos are nocturnal and become active after the lights go out. In the wild, they drink mainly droplets of water left on leaves and plants, so a light mist and settling droplets in the terrarium are a natural way for them to get water.
Humidity balance — the most important rule
The terrarium should not be constantly wet. After the evening misting, it should gradually dry out during the day. Persistently high humidity — especially with poor ventilation — can encourage mold and fungus growth and cause health problems for the gecko.
The frequency and duration of misting should be adjusted to several factors:
- Terrarium ventilation — top screen vs. solid panels
- Type of substrate — some hold moisture longer
- Amount of live plants
- Room temperature and humidity
- Season — heating dries the air more in winter than in summer
Manual misting — a good starting point
Many people starting out in the hobby begin with manual misting using a spray bottle, and with a single gecko this is usually perfectly sufficient. It takes a moment each evening and gives you direct control over the amount of water.
A bottle with a fine mist is better than one with a thick stream — you want a light mist settling on leaves and glass as fine droplets, not a terrarium soaked in water. Mist the walls, plants and hiding spots, avoiding spraying the gecko directly.
Automatic misting systems
When you have more terrariums, or simply want to be sure of regularity without misting by hand every day, an automatic misting system becomes a very practical solution. It removes the human factor and ensures good conditions for your geckos even while you're away.
Automatic misting lets you:
- Keep regularity and repeatability — the same times and duration every day
- Ensure conditions while you're away — a trip or a long day at work stops being a problem
- Set a precise schedule — times and frequency tailored to your terrariums
- Handle several terrariums at once — several nozzles can be connected to one device
- Save time — especially valuable with more tanks
Automatic systems come in various configurations — from simple devices with a timer and one or two nozzles, to more advanced kits with multiple outlets and programmable schedules. For most home keepers, a kit with 2–4 nozzles is enough.
Summary
The goal is not to keep the terrarium constantly wet, but to create a natural humidity cycle: evening misting → the gecko's activity and drinking → gradual drying during the day. This rhythm best reflects the conditions crested geckos experience in the wild.
- One thorough misting in the evening is usually enough
- The terrarium needs to dry out during the day
- Adjust frequency to ventilation, substrate and room conditions
- A spray bottle is fine for a single gecko
- An automatic misting system is worth considering with several terrariums or frequent trips
