Terrarium size — matched to the gecko's age
For a young crested gecko (a hatchling or juvenile), a smaller terrarium is the best choice to start with. In a more confined space, a young gecko feels much safer, finds its food bowl more easily, and you have full control over its appetite and development.
Crested geckos are arboreal, so as they grow you need to provide vertical space. Height and the ability to climb on branches, vines, and plants matter far more to them than floor area alone.
Ventilation — the most important (and most overlooked) factor
Many beginner keepers focus solely on raising humidity, forgetting the most important thing: a constant supply of fresh air.
What to look for? The key to the animal's health is a very large top (mesh) ventilation area. It ensures proper, continuous airflow and efficient air circulation. A well-ventilated terrarium allows excess water to evaporate and the substrate to dry out between mistings, preventing staleness, while still letting you easily maintain optimal humidity inside.

What to watch out for when buying?
Avoid the cheapest, budget glass terrariums where ventilation is limited to just a small, few-centimeter strip of perforated sheet metal on top. Such a design doesn't provide proper air exchange. A bad terrarium is a false saving — the later cost of vet treatment for your gecko or replacing moldy decor will quickly exceed what you saved on the enclosure.
